How to buy wholesale office supplies
Did you know that office supplies are a $13 billion industry in the U.S alone? This can be a great opportunity for online sellers looking to tap into a mature niche to grow their business.
If you are one of those people, consider these tips buying wholesale office supplies:
- Don't let your stock go to waste — Purchase moderately expensive office supplies that have a short life span, such as printer cartridges. You don't want to have them in your storage for a long period of time in case you're not able to sell them.
- Check and compare prices — Compare the prices of the items you are buying across several all suppliers and retailers, both online and offline. Don't assume that you can always buy cheaper in your local warehouse store (if you have one), you'll be surprise what some online distributors are able to offer you.
- Buy during back to school sales — Check your locale when school season starts. It's a good idea to plan your purchases around that period as retailers or wholsalers often give considerable discounts on stationery and other supplies for back-to-school sales.
Where to buy wholesale office supplies
Once you’ve decided the type of office supplies you're going to buy, you can look into these options to quickly find a wholesale distributor:
Google or Yahoo
Search sites like Google and Yahoo are quick and easy ways for you to search for wholesale office supplies online. A simple query like "wholesale office supplies" should return plenty of results for you to choose from.
Keep in mind, however, that these suppliers recommended are not vetted so there's a chance some of them may not actually be real. So do the diligence in your filtering process (we’ll share ours in the last section below).
Source from manufacturer
If you're trying to source wholesale office supplies at lowest cost possible and can afford to order large quantities, then consider going to the source, i.e the manufacturer. You can always negotiate a better deal when you buy lots of supplies in bulk.
This the cheapest way to get your office supplies but also one where the process can be complicated. First, the manufacturer's contact may be hard to get if you do not know where to look for. Second, most manufacturers would prefer to deal with sellers who have a reputation of selling large quantities, so you'll need to show some proof of sales beforehand.
Supplier directories
Supplier directories, like SaleHoo, vet their suppliers/manufacturers. This means you won't need to worry about finding high-quality suppliers or getting scammed. You would also get all details about them: including the years they have been in operations, contacts, shipping information, product catalog etc.
While there is a small fee ($67/year for SaleHoo), it's the best method for beginners. We even give you our market research tool, which shows you how often items sell and helps you find new products to add to your store!
Finding trusted suppliers
As we said above, not all suppliers are real wholesalers. To avoid the scammers and fraud, just follow these four steps
Contact the supplier and verify their address
Always call the number on a supplier’s site to make sure a real human comes up. For more insurance, Google their address to see if a manufacturing plant shows up.
Check your supplier’s reputation and track record
Look for suppliers with 10+ years in business. Call their previous customers to get their opinion about the manufacturer as well.
Purchase and inspect their products
Product samples can reveal a lot about a supplier. Get them to see product quality and care of handling before you commit to a big wholesale purchase.
Test their customer support
Your business relies on your supplier’s ability to produce. If their customer service sucks, it will harm your customer service as well. Call them early and often with questions.
