All those days, weeks, months of hard work. Only to finally go live with your store (yasss!) and… nothing. Traffic is slow, sales are negligible. It’s frustrating to say the least.
So what’s the problem? There are so many variables and so much conflicting information, it can seem impossible to find a solution.
One thing that countless business veterans keep emphasizing is the importance of mentorship. To have expert guidance from someone with the experience to get you through the hard parts.
And SaleHoo can be just that. With over 15 years’ worth of experience in the eCommerce realm and two founders who started out just where you are (and are now running 7 figure dollar businesses!), we have a wealth of knowledge to show you the way to your personal success story.
But let us show you what we’re talking about… first let’s take a look at what might be going wrong with your store.
Where Things Go Wrong
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the endless number of variables in this online business of yours, we don’t blame you.
Figuring out the problem can seem like trying to find a needle in a haystack – where to even start?!
Below are some of the top reasons for slow traffic and conversions.
There’s a lot to learn when it comes to paid media!
It’s easy enough to figure out the basics and get your first ads up and running (on Facebook, Instagram, Google etc), but sales often fall down at the effectiveness of your ads. This means you’re spending valuable marketing budget, but not seeing any return on ad spend (ROAS).
There are many things to consider, such as audience segmentation, targeting the right interests, effective ad creatives, and compelling copy.
But your also need to think about whether some ads are really worth running at all.
For example, on Google, only about 1% of clicks result in a sale. This means you have to fork out for 100 clicks before any money comes back into the business.
So if your average order value is low, it doesn’t make sense to run Google ads at all, because you’ll actually be losing money.
Are you leveraging your social media accounts and blog? If you haven’t even thought about setting these up, you’ve got some homework to do!
A solid content strategy involves posting regular, quality content on your blog and supporting this through your social channels. Ideally, you’ll have bespoke social content on top of that.
Content marketing is a long-term game, so you won’t be seeing results straight away. Once people start reading and sharing your content, Google’s algorithm will slowly adjust and bump you up in search results. Without it, your SEO will be sorely lacking.
In addition, lack of content results in a weak brand presence. If potential customers are looking you up on, say, Instagram, they’ll be more compelled to delve deeper if the content they find is relevant to them and resonates with their own needs and values.
More on how to figure out the relationship between paid ad campaigns and content marketing below.
Email is huge, and that’s not an exaggeration. It’s extremely effective, with a click-to-conversion rate of 6.7%, which is almost seven times higher than that for Google Ads! If you’re not leveraging this tool, you’re shooting yourself in the foot.
You can only effectively use email marketing to your advantage is if you have a significant email list. So collecting email subscriptions on your website is a must. You can do so through a pop-up, sidebar, or in the footer.
To make your newsletter more appealing, consider offering a goodie such as 10% off or free shipping in return for signing up.
And don’t forget email automation! Research shows that a huge 35% of customers who click on an automated email (such as abandoned cart emails) end up finalizing a purchase.
Which brand would you trust more: one you find through an ad on Facebook or one that came recommended from a friend?
If you’re like 92% of consumers around the world, you’ll prefer word-of-mouth recommendations over any other form of advertising – Just one compelling reason why prioritising customer care is so important.
Add to that the fact that acquiring a new customer is up to 7 times more expensive than retaining an existing one, and you’ll see why you really need to focus on customer retention.
This starts at transparency and regular communication, and should include great customer support (e.g. live chat), but can also extend to loyalty and referral programs.
One of the huge advantages of starting an online business today is that it’s easy to collect a lots of data quickly. This means, after your initial launch you have to stop the guesswork and make informed decision based on actual numbers.
This goes from audience data from your shop and campaigns (e.g. who are your customers and how are they finding you) to ad performance and shop statistics (e.g. average order value, abandoned cart rate).
But what are you doing with all this data? If you’re not using it to improve, iterate and fine-tune your shop and marketing tactics, then you’re really missing an opportunity here.
As you can see there’s, a lot to think about when optimizing your business for sales and conversions. And it’s the seamless combination of all elements that will lead to a truly successful online business.
If this sounds like a lot and you don’t know where to start, you can take a deep breath. And exhale.
We have just the solution for you…
