We all know how competitive eBay and likes like it are, especially for dropshipping. So you always need to be looking for something that will give you an edge over your rivals.

BUNDLING

A bundling technique is more commonly used when trying to nego a purchase deal on multiple items. For example, the seller wants $20 a piece for an item, but has 6 in total. So you make a bundled offer, instead of buying one, you take multiple at a reduced unit price, perhaps 3 for $50 and so on.

Well this bundling technique works both ways, it can also be an effective marketing tool. Let's take jewellery as an example, you are dropshipping a ring, what you can then do is add complimenting items such as ear rings, bracelet and so on. The idea being, that you are making your margin on the ring only, then selling the other bundled options at cost.

What this does is add value for a customer, if they bought each item individually then it would cost them more than buying in the bundle. I think it's always also a good idea to have the bundled items for sale individually as their normal price as well as this then can serve as a marketing tool to show how much better value this deal is.

Most people love a bargain and even if they didn't come in looking for all the added accessories, only the ring, a lot will still get hooked on the value and purchase the deal. They might keep them, give to family or friends, even try to resell individually themselves.

There are some tricks to pulling off the technique, mostly the items as to compliment each other. Throwing a used truck tyre, with a diamond ring and a pair of torn jeans, probably isn't going to get most people's attention, so you have to bundle carefully and don't get carried away with the amount you bundle, it's easy to over complicate and actually turn the customer off buying.

My suggestion, minimum 3 things , maximum 5. With 5 items, you may find that you can make margin on 2, possibly 3 and still be offering serious hard to turn down value by keeping the other two or three at cost. It works best if you are buying from the same dropshipper because of course all the products arrive at the same time and you don't get an angry customer wanting to know where the other items are, but from a cost effective view point, your dropshipper may well provide a shipping discount, so another bonus to you!

I've used jewellery as an example, but have a think about the genre you deal in and what type of bundles you could put together, it might just open up a completely new sales avenue for you!

Hello,

This comments are very interesting. But what happened in Amazon´s market, is the bundling technique could be applied?

Hi Luis,

I'm not an expert on Amazon, but I can't see why the same principal couldn't be used. Of course I've focused on eBay because most of our members tend to focus on eBay as a selling platform, but this marketing technique can used on multiple platforms, even your own independent website.

OK, despite this post on bundling techniques being focused toward a marketing tool for eBay. This shouldn't be over looked as a technique to use on your own website to increase sales. I've just been speaking with a member regarding this so I thought I would expand that here for others as well.

Bundling deals is a great way to increase sales. All you have to do is to create a special offers category, then start putting some of these deals together. Things like video games, list 3 games all together as a weekly special. One game has the normal margin included, the other two are bundled at cost.

It's not costing you are the seller anything extra, but it's providing the customer with a genuine saving and solid encouragement to spend the money. Now you have to be savy with what games/items you bundle, the deal has to make sense for a customer to spend the money, but get that part right and you're well on the way to increasing your bottom line.

Why not start a "mates rates" club, a members discount club. Spend this much money and get these games at this discount price for this month, that type of deal. People want value and sellers want money, there's absolutely no reason at all that both of these things can't be reached if you are creative about your marketing strategy.

Don't forget, happy customers share good deals with friends, then those friends share their deals with others and well ..... this isn't rocket science people. That's how you build a network of customers quickly and effectively, with you doing a very limited amount of the work yourself.

Are you a dropshipper?

Then consider this hidden benefit. If you start selling in blocks of 3 or more items per order, you're going to become a very important customer to the supplier, that in turn may well give you bargaining power for a better deal for yourself, which in turn you can then pass on to the customer, which in turn provides them with a better deal, which in turn creates more talk, more traffic and more sales ...... just follow the bouncing ball!

If you're playing the long game, then this is the strategy you should be playing for my money!

Mark absolutely true! yo know I have used the tecnique, two days ago, bundling musical instruments for kids! which result in 55% ROI awesome when you use this as a marketing tool 100% prooved ;)

Fantastic new Luis, really good to see it working for you.

Now I don't know what other things you sell, but I would suggest now looking at increasing your stock profile by layering. Layering is marketing associated products to that of your main genre. So musical instruments being the main genre, things like instrument carry cases, sheet music, DVDs on learning how to play and so on.

It can be really surprising where chasing the layering technique can lead you, you can end up finding products you've never even heard of. Every time you find a fringe product, that can then lead you in a completely different direction again and what you end up is a main product genre, then all these others products that ll relate generally, but create real interest in diversity of product and can create sales you never would have even thought of originally.

That's also a way to keep people coming back, you keep adding little bits here and there and customers will always be encouraged to keep coming back. The one you never want is for a customer to think they have seen all there is to see, because then you've lost them. You always need to give a customer a reason to come back, even if it's just to window shop, the important part is having them in your shop as much as possible.

Bundling is highly recommended on Amazon. It is one way to win the Buy Box. You need to have a Pro Membership of $40 USD a month in order to bundle products.
