What's the cost of importing to the UK?

I am new to importing and was wondering if any one could tell me what the additional cost if any are there , If say for instance I wanted 10 items lets say toy items from America to the uk, Ive worked out my price inc delivery to be $500 are there any other cost I should be aware of or is this my total price, any advice much appreciated.

Hi mate, IF you are caught by customs, you can expect to pay 17.5% VAT and a few % duty. That is if you get hit.

Thanks cooly so do I take it that its only if they stop your order to check it you only have to pay up? on average how often does this happen.

Usually for lots over say $300 pounds you will get hit and anything smaller usually (and don't quote us) gets through.

Customs generally aren't looking for the smaller lots, rather the big packages that people are using for business purposes.

Anyone else have any other experiences to share?

what would be an average extra cost be? would you say 15 -20 % to the total billing.

Also are charges the same across the board or is it different from USA ,China ect.
