Staying out of electronics from an outsider's view

Saw Link hidden: Login to view editorial on Engadget that made me think about some of the recent conversations here about the electronics niche. It's a terrible niche, and although that article has nothing at all to do with wholesaling, it gives a good perspective why via a glimpse at tablet and smartphone pricing in the last couple of years. The same thing currently happening in tablets and smartphones happened with monitors and televisions in the latter half of the previous decade; before that, it was laptops and MP3 players and digital cameras (especailly once the phones started offering MP3 and camera functionality.)

The phrase "race to the bottom" is typically used in a derogatory sense, but I tend to think it's a good thing when it comes to consumer economics. However, the issue with trying to be a profitable middleman in that niche should be obvious: Major companies exit certain product niches tens of millions of dollars upside on their products, in hopes they'll make it back on the next big thing (as HTC and LG did with tablets, as the article notes.)

It is just a brutal, brutal market. It takes drive, connections, money and marketing savvy to float at all, and an electronics-focused sales niche will almost certainly run at a loss for a while before it even gets enough name recognition to get regular orders coming in. So be careful folks.

I fully agree with you. New electronics sales are hard. I found a rather good niche with them.

Used functional electronics.

I have sold everything I ever put online in used electronics. I just sold a 5 year old LCD monitor for $35.00 USD. I upgraded my old computer.

It is the only category I have 100% sales in.

I have never bought used electronics. They are given to me by family and friends. They know I sell them.

I am sure Salehoo has some good sources.

It is just a brutal, brutal market. It takes drive, connections, money and marketing savvy to float at all, and an electronics-focused sales niche will almost certainly run at a loss for a while before it even gets enough name recognition to get regular orders coming in. So be careful folks.

This is so true for many sellers who trying to conquer the electronics market, yet many new sellers don't see this, they just see how high the market demand is for various electronic products and blindly take the plunge.

Finding a product with a high profit margin usually means finding a niche market.

Here are some products we have found to have good profit margins:

- Clothing

- Skin care (e.g. anti-ageing & acne treatment)

- Vacation-related items (swimsuits, crocs, sunblock)

- Homewares (towels, sheets)

- Accessories for electronics

- Crafts & hobby items

- Sporting goods

- Computers & computer parts

- Auto & motorbike

- Unique items/collectibles

However, bear in mind that we give out this list to anyone who asks! It is always most profitable to come up with your own niche market.

One of the best ways of doing this is just by selling some stuff from around the house that you no longer need any more. In the process, you will often stumble across items that sell really well that you would never have otherwise picked!

Chinese company! So while they may be a legit company to deal with, the branded phones they are selling are non-genuine!

Looks like Marc's addressed your concern :) Just keep in mind that Chinese suppliers are never an option for any authentic brand name products may it be electronic products, clothing, handbags or shoes - They are just simply not the suppliers to buy from for branded products.
