Why do most of the suppliers on salehoo not require sales tax id?

I noticed that most the suppliers on salehoo do not require a tax id. From what I understand this means that they are not a legit wholesaler or manufacturer. can the ones that do not require it be trusted? Whats the deal?

Yes, we do have a number suppliers that do not require tax ID but this does not make them illegitimate or illegal and unsafe to deal with. Please be assured that the suppliers listed in our directory have been pre-screened to ensure our members that they are safe to deal with.

These suppliers may not require you outright to have a tax ID but you will be asked for one if you are located in the same state as the supplier you are buying from.

@tkeyes You have it backwards: many suppliers require some kind of cert number to protect themselves from being overrun by idiots and looky-loos. A sales tax licence, federal TIN/EIN or local occupation/business licence has absolutely no bearing on whether or not your own business is legitimate or credible. In the US, anyone can get any of these cerifications with minimal effort and expense. Suppliers who require these numbers generally are banking on the fact that most people do not realise how trivial it is to get one, and that it discourages time wasters from contacting them.

I agree with Frank... And a supplier posted on the forum a few weeks back that often times being suppliers, they ask for such documents for their own protection too! But when suppliers don't require you to submit a sales tax ID it doesn't mean they are not legit.

So, if I live in WA State, but my drop shipper is in say Indiana, do I need a tax resell permit? If so, do I pay taxes at the end of each quarter? What if I have a drop shipper in a few different states? Do I need a resell permit in every state I have a drop shipper?

It really depends on what country, what state and so on as to what your local regulations are. It's really best to get advice from the local authorities in my opinion, that way you know it's absolutely correct.

In the US, sales tax is automatically due for online sales to in-state customers. Some states expect their residents to report untaxed out of state purchases and pay sales tax on them (no, really) but it is not currently incumbent upon merchants to keep track of those sales.
