How to distinguish Fake iPods? Serial numbers?

So I've been talking with some iPod suppliers with some decent prices, maybe a little too good. Most are from China, and I know it is possible to make fakes. I've heard about one way to tell if it's a fake is something to do with a serial number but how would I do that? Are there any other ways? I know this has been posted here a few times but I've never seen much of a clear answer. Any insight is appreciated! Thanks!

I talked with the supplier some more, he gave me some serial numbers, I guess I can check them out at Apple.com. Does this prove anything, can't you just get these numbers from anywhere? Anybody got any helpful things to say?

If you go to Link hidden: Login to view you can enter your serial number and it will tell you the estimated purchase date based on the production date, or it will tell you if it's not a valid serial. I've also read that some fakes don't work with iTunes, though I suspect those would be low-quality fakes. The problem with either method is that you have to open the box because the serial number on the outside could be different than the inside, and obviously you have to open the box to see if it works with iTunes, and that kills your resale right there.

Thanks, they gave about 9 serial numbers, 3 checked out, the other 6 did not. I guess this means they're fakes or what? Also, it's in China, no offense to anybody but I just don't like the idea too much of dealing out of the country. Shipping is a hassle and payment methods are scary.

I've purchased several Ipods and several of the fake ipods/mp4 players. I can verify that the fake ipods will not work with itunes. I've even contacted itunes about this. Ipods are the only mp3 players compatible with itunes.

I just ordered some 2gb Ipod nano's from china for $135 a piece brand new. I'm expecting the order here soon. If all goes well I would be willing share the supplier info, just let me know if your interested.

I would just use paypal for payments when dealing with overseas suppliers. Unless you've used them before and trust them.
