Hello All: I'm just breaking into the e-commerce world of selling. Having a tough time finding a niche that is in demand and low in competition. Any advice from the pros out there will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a billion.

What to sell? - Is one of the most commonly asked questions on the forum.

If you are just a beginner, then it would be best to experiment a bit by selling a few things from your home, you know stuff that you set aside and haven't used for a long time. Even if I give you a list right now there is no guarantee that that list of products will sell in the market you are catering to. One product may sell well in some areas and not in others so to start by selling things in your home is one of the best ways of uncovering a niche that works for you!

Plus, if you are selling on eBay then this is your chance to build your feedback - customers will almost always prefer sellers with good feedback scores over those that have none.

You will also get to practice your selling skills, learn how to effectively photograph your products (Link hidden: Login to view) and other tricks of the trade.

One more benefit of starting out this way is you have little to no financial risk. Since the products you are selling are yours - no capital was spent and most likely you'll shell out money for the listing fees only.

Just in case, here are some products that are excellent sellers, plus they are fairly easy to get hold of -

* Clothing: accessories, plus sizes, maternity, night wear.

* Kitchen: recipes, knife sets, toasters, microwaves

* Beauty: sunscreen, insect repellent, cosmetic & toiletry bags, men's grooming

* Homewares: towels, sheets, rugs, throws, cushions, vases, mirrors

* Special occasion: wedding supplies, party supplies, mother-of-the bride outfits, bridal shoes, birthday cards

* Garden : lawn mowers, gardening tool sets, composter

Another way for you to uncover possible niche products is by exploring your hobbies and interests.

Richelle has given you some very sound advice there.

In regards to developing a niche market, it usually take a lot of time, research and test marketing. Not many get lucky by stumbling upon a product that is under supplied on a site such as eBay, and that essentially is what a niche market is.

Of course there are varying degrees of markets like that, but essentially a niche is simply a market where the demand is out stripping the supply.

My personal belief is that niche markets are nowhere near as affective as they were due to the effectiveness of market research sites. Someone can spend a lot of time, effort and money developing a niche product range, and then all your work can easily be discovered simply by using a program such as Terapeak and before you know it your once niche market is saturated.

It's just a fact of modern e-commerce, but having said that, don't think I am suggesting that you don't put the effort in to developing a niche market. They can still pay off on a smaller scale, if you can keep the market from being really obvious to those looking.

The more obvious products to look at when considering a niche are those products related to hot selling items. For example, an iPhone, look at what accessories are used with iPhones, then start looking there. From there you might find another product range related to an accessory, and then go off in a different direction.

It's always a good place to start I think, you never quite know where you will end up if you keep digging down : )

Another place you can try is craft type weekend markets. You can usually find some pretty unique hand made items there and you can talk to the creator about supplying you, just don't tell them where you are selling or you're just giving them ideas : )

so what niche do you get into if most things are becoming over saturated ? theres so many so were do you start , ive heard you supposed to start were things are in demand for people like what do people need & not want , but how can you stay focused and interested in things that your not used to selling , or dont like to do or have a interest or passion for yourself......it can be pretty boring digging through and finding things like this,so what do you do if your stuck in this situation,ive found myself going back over and over a couple days ago on what to sell,you find things things here and there to sell.but how can you stay active in selling, i know you have to look for different nich ideas every day because people will beat you to it then it will eventually become oversaturated ,and when this happens you wont sell much and ebay doesnt like this haha they will say your performance sucks, and hold your paypal money in your accoun for even longer , i might want to become a ebay power seller soon , i like that little badge that displayed on your listings, to me that means your official and you've been doing this for a minute and your good at what your doing....

The popular advice most like to share is that you should get into the hot selling items and that's great advice if you have the cashflow to do it. However, if you don't have the budget to buy and large wholesale volume to secure the best possible price and then sell on very thin margins to enable you to compete, then it's the worst advice on the planet!

High demand items on sites like eBay and Amazon equales high competition markets, so if you don't have the ability to play with the big end of town you'll get chewed up and spat pot before you even try to start. For example, the iPhone market, always one of the hottest, but even the thought of trying to get into a market like that using dropshipping is borderline insane.

Developing a passion into an e-commerce business is great, so long as you have both the ability and the cashflow to do so successfully or at least to give yourself a chance of success, but very few of us are fortunate to have both of those to enable us to do that. E-commerce is a business, it's not a hobby unless that's what you want to make it. Sure, it would be lovely if everyone could just make a good living selling things we are all passionate about, but that's not the reality of business and especially not e-commerce business. If you're serious, then this business is about finding marketshare and you only do that by finding markets that allow you to compete based on your budget and business ability, and that only ever very rarely aligns with something you are passionate about.

This is business and it's mostly a research business. If you're not researching new and evolving markets, then you should be researching your competition to ensure you are remaining competitive or shading them as much as possible. The moment you stop doing that is the moment you give up any chance of being successful in e-commerce.

So it all comes down to what you want to get out of it. If you want a hobby that can excite you, then that's easy. If you want a successful e-commerce business, then that's where the grind comes in and after all that grind there is still never a guarantee of success. So you really have to decide what you really want to get out of it for yourself.
