How do you interpret the results for Research Labs?

Another newbie here ... and I was wondering what is the proper way to read the results you get from research labs.

For instance, right now on a hot list is PANDORA (number one), looks like it is 90% in demand ... what does it mean? Tons of people looking to buy?

When you send it to labs, you realize that it has only 0.5% Sell-Through rate.

Does it mean that there are tons of listings and no one really buying?

On another side, Age of Empire is currently on NOT HOT list, but when you send it labs, you can see that it has 26.8% Sell-Through rate.

If I was to choose between two of these products, would I be looking at the one that has the highest Sell-through rate even if it is listed as NOT Hot.

Little confused :( Hopefully someone can clarify this for me.

Thanks for your post, I think we do need to provide some more information on using the lab, because it can seem confusing!

The green bar actually represents the overall internet 'hotness' rating for the product and takes into account the number of Google searches, eBay requests and a bunch of other factors. So it's actually showing you the internet popularity for the product, not just the eBay popularity. That is why there may be a difference when you then check the sell-through rate on eBay.

The same goes for the red bar, which looks at the overall amount of supply for the item on eBay and the internet in general.

Hi Grace,

You were right, the Research Labs is pretty confusing. I need some advices from you too.

For example, one keyword has 29 demands and only about 1,500 active auctions, another keyword has 25 demands but almost 20,000 active auctions. But, it looks like the second keyword has above 90% green bar and the first keyword only has 75% green bar.

From the example above, don't you think that the first keyword has more potential since there is more demands and less auction? But why does the percentage green bar look conflicting with the result?

Hi Kikie,

That does seem a bit odd! Would you mind telling me what the keywords are that you were comparing? You can PM me if you don't want to let everyone see.

I will look into it and check with our developers if it seems something is a bit off. This tool is still in beta testing, so there may be some bugs every now and again.

I checked the what's hot or not keywords and found that "living room furniture" has 29 request and 2714 active with 88% green bar, while "leather living room furniture" has 120 request and only 729 active auction, but the keyword only get 63% green bar. We all know that the more active auction means more competitor.

I think you were right, the percentage green bar mostly depends on monthly searches. The more searches the keyword gets the more percentage the green bar. From this point, what exactly the green and red bar means?

Another one is the Demand figure, when I checked ebay want it now, the keyword "living room furniture" has 0 results. To tell the truth, I don't understand this either... :-)

I have asked our developers about this, as I think there are some other metrics the R&A lab uses to determine the green/red bar result (apart from auctions and requests). Will get back to you when I hear.
